About PlayZoomers

PlayZoomers is a live, online theatre company that has produced more than 100 plays since 2020. It was founded during the pandemic and has thrived ever since thanks to support by enthusiastic national and international theatre artists and audiences. We present seven performances (~22 plays) per year on Zoom – ranging from single, full-length plays to multiple short plays.

PlayZoomers produces appealing, affordable performances featuring original plays of different genres, lengths, and cast sizes. We offer audiences a way to experience theatre and connect with diverse, professional theatre artists regardless of the weather, their location, finances, mobility, or other factors. The company offers opportunities for actors to flex their creative muscles in new ways, for directors to rise to the challenge of online production, and for playwrights to adapt their work to a digital platform while reaching a new audience. PlayZoomers provides an opportunity for theatre artists to work with others across the country and around the world in a way not possible in live theatre.

PlayZoomers seeks creative ways to make use of its online productions, such as licensing one recording as a training tool for caregivers and another as a themed presentation at a statewide conference, working with a screenwriter to turn a screenplay into a Zoom play that can be used as a teaching tool for Grades 6-12, joining forces with a university drama department to create a purpose-built stage and live stream a play, and partnering with a national organization to offer its members a special live performance.

PlayZoomers welcomes artists and audiences of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Our dramas, comedies, and not-easily-categorized plays have wide-ranging themes: love, in all its permutations; human foibles; theatre tales; planning for the inevitable (death); noir mysteries; generations; holidays; and others. Productions include backgrounds (real or virtual), lighting, sound effects, music, video, props, and costumes. Each online performance is given twice, on weekend evenings. PlayZoomers offers captioning and accessible playbills. Live Talkbacks follow each performance.

PlayZoomers values arts-based learning, too. We train online directors and hold Table Reads for playwrights with new work. We partner with another nonprofit on a literacy program, “Act Me a Story,” producing storybook videos for under-resourced children of color.

PlayZoomers, Inc. is a nonprofit organization (public charity) under Internal Revenue Code section 501 (c) 3.
